My Skincare Routine

Through the years my beauty routine has taken on many forms. I go anywhere from a multi step skincare regimen to using the same two products for morning and hopefully night, if I haven’t just gone to bed with my full face of makeup on. I was doing the step by step Korean beauty skincare  regimen a year ago. Along with spending way more time on hair, makeup and needless to say… shaving. I usually go through phases with things and I know for myself weather plays a key role. I don’t know if you’ve heard or not but, it’s WINTER!

So let’s go back to about a year ago when I was just getting into Korean skin care. Like many I’m sure, I got into it by watching YouTube videos. One of my favorite beauty vloggers is Morgan’s Beauty Breakdown. The only problem with watching her videos was I spent a lot of money. The most important thing to know about Korean skincare is that there are a LOT of steps, and steps are expensive! Let’s go over the steps.

Korean skincare implements a double cleansing protocol: first you use an oil based cleanser or balm then wash it off and follow with a foam cleanser. I started off using the Clean it Zero Purity Cleansing Balm and then later switched to the E Nature Moringa Cleansing Balm. I have oily skin as it is and felt the E Nature just worked better for my skin type. I didn’t use Korean facial cleansers, I was already a tried and true user of Burt’s Bees Soap Bark and Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream, I used that with my Clarisonic Mia 2. I would also alternate facial cleansers, on the off days I would use my Eminence Stone Crop Gel Wash which you can purchase on Amazon for $31.25. I love these two because I do have super oily skin and I feel these two do a great job of controlling that oil. I did love starting off with the E Nature Moringa Cleansing Balm. The purpose of that is to one, remove make up and two remove dirt and built up oil. So you fight oil with oil, sounds crazy but I think it did work!

Exfoliating can be a daunting task. It needs to be done! I’m sure you’ve heard however that it’s not good to exfoliate every day or it might irritate your skin. What I was doing was two forms of exfoliation and alternating them. On day one I was using a manual exfoliation, which there are many different types you could use, I was using my Clarisonic facial brush. On day two I was implementing a chemical exfoliator, I either used the Neogen BIO-Peel Gauze Peeling Wine pads which smelled amazing, or I used the CosRx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid. This seemed kind of like a toner to me so when I used this product I skipped my toner. Regularly the toner I did use was, not a Korean product but I was hooked on it long before this Korean beauty venture, Thayers Witch Hazel Alcohol Free Toner.

I tried what was considered to be the holly grail of Korean beauty Essences – the Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence in Intensive Moist. This product I have to say fell a little flat. I really didn’t notice a difference with or without it.

Next on to serum. I’m a firm believer in the importance of vitamin c in skincare so this is the step in my routine where I typically incorporated my vitamin c. I used Vitamin C Serum 22 by Serumtologie which you can purchase  from Amazon for $35. This product is amazing! One of the only products that I believe you can start to see a difference within the first use! However as I am the type of person who can’t say no to a product I put this on the shelf for awhile to try the Missha Time Revolution Night Repair Ampoule but again this Missha product left me disappointed and I don’t think it was worth the hype.

Face cream. Literally one of the most important steps! I tried a few different creams but found these to be my favorite. Etud House Collagen Moistfull Facial Freshner I found to be so good for my skin type! Again I have oily skin and this lotion was so light weight and didn’t feel greasy! Also as I mentioned in my last blog I loved the Mizon Snail Recovery Gel! This worked great alone, as a night gel or to use on top of your lotion or cream as a sleeping pack. Lastly you have to apply eye cream. The only one I had tried was Laneige Water Bank Eye Gel. I liked the product but I didn’t love the product.

All in all I would say with this skincare routine you pay a lot to be really clean, moisturized and to smell good. But you know what, at the end of the day what more do you want?! I have since then greatly reduced my morning skincare  routine, particularly due to moving in with my boyfriend and lack of space in the bathroom. My skincare routine now consists of cleansing, still with the above two cleansers and my Clarisonic brush, though I haven’t charged it in awhile. Then I use a new lotion that I got in my FabFitFun box a few months back, I use, Murad Skin Perfecting Lotion which is an oil free light weight lotion that doesn’t clog my pores and provides the perfect amount of moisture. That’s my morning routine. My nighttime routine consists of me wiping my face with Burts Bees Facial Cleansing Towelettes in the scent White Tea Extract. It’s usually hit or miss if I make it to washing my face after that but if I do kudos to me! Sometimes we don’t even use the face wipes.

Side note – all of these steps are not even including all of the different mask, sheet masks and sleeping packs that are involved with Korean skincare!

As it is fun to try different products, I don’t think it’s necessary to do the whole Korean skincare regimen. I didn’t notice THAT much of a difference by following all the steps. I think you should tailor your regimen around what your skin needs and maybe you only need one or two products to help with what you need. Also I think you should do what makes you feel good and do what you enjoy so if you like doing all the steps, go for it!
