Drinking unhealthy beverages is a sneaky way of intaking a lot of unnecessary sugar and other harmful ingredients. I don’t always stay on the straight and narrow when it comes to my diet and sometimes, ahem, holiday season, I just about fall off the path all together. Even with the holidays though I try to stay good about my beverages. Here is a list drinks I have stopped drinking and why.
We’ve all heard it, soda is bad! All kinds, dark, light and everything in between – yes, even Ginger Ale is bad! A typical 16 ounce soda contains about 13 teaspoonfuls of sugar! That is more than your recommended intake for the whole day! To put things in perspective for you, The American Heart Association recommends women should have no more than six teaspoons of sugar in a day. Also taking into consideration it’s loaded with a ton of chemical dyes and other additives, why would ya? I get that sometimes a soda can’t be avoided, maybe your stomach hurts and a Ginger Ale would help settle it, maybe you’ve had a week and you really want a Jack and Coke. Whatever the reason is, don’t make it a habit!
Again, the amount of sugar in juice is your daily intake of sugar all gulped down in a few sips. That’s TOO much! Even if you’re talking about fresh squeezed, homemade juice. It takes three medium sized oranges to make 8 ounces of juice, a full glass is typically 16 ounces. One medium sized orange has 9 grams of sugar which doesn’t seem like much, but for the full glass that would be 13.5 teaspoons of sugar! Even though it’s natural sugar, 13.5 teaspoons in just a glass of juice is too much! It would be better to have one orange to eat and a glass of water!
3. Coffee Mate creamer
This is not only bad because of it’s high sugar content, it is also non dairy, which might check some boxes for some people but it also makes it high is trans fat. It is not recommended to have more than 2 grams of trans fat per day and Coffee Mate creamer can contain one gram per tablespoon! If you are not familiar with trans fat, this is processed partially hydrogenated oil. Hydrogenation is a chemical process in which hydrogen is added to liquid oils to turn them into solid form. These are bad for you because they raise your LDL or “bad” cholesterol. It is also chock full of preservatives! Basically coffee mate creamer is a chemical, non-food substance. Do not ingest.
4. Sweetened nut milk
Okay nut milks are delicious! I love the Blue Diamond Coconut Almond Blend, only I get it unsweetened. I don’t drink too much milk and if I’m cooking or baking I use regular whole milk. Sweet nut milks I think are pointless. You’re not getting too much added protein and it’s just silly to have added sugar in these.
5. Sweetened ice tea
I love the taste of regular ol’ tea! If I want to spice it up I’ll do honey or lemon. Again added sugar here I think is pointless. It’s not good for you to ingest all of this sugar! Having added sugar in your drink makes it so easy to go over your sugars for the day!
Why is sugar bad for you?
It’s added calories, it’s not good if you’re a diabetic, it disrupts your insulin levels which in turn will effect all of your other hormones levels and it increases your blood sugar levels and your triglycerides which puts you at risk for heart disease! If that’s not enough it also causes premature aging! Excessive sugar consumption can cause long term damage to skin proteins, meaning loss of collagen and elastin! It also causes bloating and weight gain. With all that considered, I think I’ll stick to drinking water, wine and coffee with good ol’ fashioned real creamer.
As always, thanks for reading!
