We had been planning and replanning our wedding for what seemed like years. We were supposed to get married in 2020 but we all know what happened there – COVID. We had a bigger wedding in mind at first and then after having to cancel the venue and go through issues with getting our security deposit back we thought long and hard about going smaller, and by smaller I mean just the two of us.
We got married on 05.12.2021
There was no wedding shower, no bachelorette/ bachelor weekend events, no cake tasting, no wedding menu planning, no decorating, no stress.
The morning of our wedding started like a regular day. He got up at 5:30 to leave to go get the girls ready for school and on the bus. I woke up, had coffee while watching Tik Tok on the couch and then got dressed. I made a 9 am hair appointment so once I was ready I took off. Hair took about an hour and a half and then I went to Starbucks to get a coffee. We both got ready in the apartment, me in the bedroom and him in the living room. We were careful we didn’t see each other at any part of the getting ready process. Once he was ready he left to go to a local park where we were going to meet each other and then drive together. I left shortly after.
He was waiting for me in front of a large fountain, his back was turned so he couldn’t see me walking up. As soon as I approached I said, “hey babe,” like I always do and he turned around. He said I never looked more beautiful. We walked back up the little path hand in hand to the car to drive to the court house to finally become husband and wife.
Getting married just the two of us was a decision that we had made for ourselves. I am sure we stepped on some toes and that there are people who were upset we didn’t do the big wedding. I checked in with him multiple times before we got married to make sure he wouldn’t look back and regret not having the girls there, he said he wouldn’t.
After we said our I dos we went back to the park to meet our photographer. Just because we got married at the court house didn’t mean we still couldn’t have professional photos!
After photos we went to my parents for some hors d’oeuvres and cake. My mom really wanted to see us on our wedding day and after the year she had I wasn’t about to say no.
We then stopped home to change, grab our bags and some more Starbucks before making the two hour drive up to Lake Placid. We took two nights to ourselves and it was amazing! It was so nice to have a quick wedding and then to be able to take right off and get away for a few days. The weather was absolutely gorgeous – blue sky, sun and a great spring breeze. We were able to enjoy some time alone and really focus on each other.
Neither of us ever wanted the big wedding. In the beginning we felt pressured into it but in the end we ultimately did what we wanted to do. I can honestly say I will never look back and wish we did it any differently.
